What we do

African Bee Ecology Network (ABEN) works at the intersection of ecology, research, enterprise, and community empowerment to protect pollinators and strengthen sustainable livelihoods across Africa.

Our work integrates science-based research, conservation action, capacity building, and international collaboration to build resilient ecosystems and inclusive economic opportunities.

Conservation & Habitat Restoration

Healthy pollinator populations depend on thriving ecosystems. ABEN supports conservation initiatives that restore habitats critical to bees and other pollinators while strengthening biodiversity and climate resilience.

We focus on:

  • Pollinator and bee habitat restoration pilots in East Africa
  • Community-based tree planting and forage development programs
  • Promotion of pollinator-friendly agricultural landscapes
  • Ecosystem stewardship initiatives supporting biodiversity conservation

Through these efforts, we help rebuild ecological balance while supporting sustainable agricultural systems.

Research & Climate Resilience

Research & Climate Resilience

ABEN advances research in bee ecology, pollinator health, and climate adaptation strategies to inform sustainable agricultural development and policy.

Our research priorities include:

  • Baseline mapping of bee populations and pollinator health (2026 launch)
  • Climate-smart hive technology and adaptive management practices
  • Pollination services and ecosystem resilience studies
  • Collaborative research partnerships with universities and scientific institutions

We translate research findings into practical, community-level solutions that protect pollinators and improve livelihoods.

Training & Capacity Building

Strengthening local capacity is central to our mission. ABEN equips smallholder beekeepers, youth, and women with the technical knowledge and tools needed to practice environmentally responsible apiculture.

Our training initiatives include:

  • 3–5 day field workshops integrating bee ecology and habitat management
  • Community extension sessions on pollinator conservation
  • Webinars and digital learning tools on sustainable beekeeping practices
  • Mentorship programs supporting youth and women in ecological entrepreneurship

Our featured program, the Introductory Sustainable Beekeeping Workshop, provides hands-on training in hive management, colony health, honey quality standards, and environmental stewardship.

Training & Capacity Building
Market Access & Trade Linkages

Market Access & Trade Linkages

Sustainable livelihoods require fair and responsible market connections. ABEN facilitates collaboration between African producers and Canadian institutions to strengthen ecological enterprise development.

We support:

  • Canada–Africa collaboration in sustainable beekeeping equipment
  • Honey quality improvement and value-chain development initiatives
  • Responsible trade linkages for smallholder producers
  • Knowledge exchange between manufacturers, researchers, and practitioners

By strengthening market systems, we promote environmentally responsible economic growth in the beekeeping sector.

Youth & Women Empowerment

Inclusive participation is essential for resilient environmental systems. ABEN promotes youth engagement and gender equity within the beekeeping and pollinator conservation sectors.

Our empowerment initiatives include:

  • Women in bee ecology enterprise programs
  • Youth Green Entrepreneurship initiatives focused on pollinator services
  • Leadership mentorship and capacity-building opportunities
  • Inclusive participation in research, training, and policy dialogue

By empowering diverse leaders, we strengthen communities while advancing environmental sustainability.
